The creation of the common language (Putonghua) in the People's Republic of China
Abstract
In this paper I describe the language policy and the language planning of standard spoken Chinese in mainland China. I focus on the present multilingual situation ofthe People' s Republic ofChina (§ l ), the language policy and planning (§2), the status planning ( §3) and the acquisition planning ( §4) of spoken Chinese.
