Abstract

The literature on right hemisphere damaged (RHD) speakers describes their narrative discourse as being less informative, even if the
number of words is similar or superior to controls. However, very few studies address the need of binding together the quantification of grammatical categories and the qualitative
analysis of discourse-pragmatic categories such as informative load. In this paper we quantify the Mean Length of Turn (MLT) in words and the percentage of lexical types produced by seven RHD adults in story sequences within semi-structured conversations, and we compare the resulting data with those from a corpus of controls. Results show two sharp profiles of RHD speakers in relation to MLT, one of them exhibiting an excessive verbal production, and the other one being characterised by scarcity of speech. They also show that the decrease in informative load is not due to a lessening of the amount of lexical types.
