Abstract
This essay invites to a reflection, from the literary studies, about the methodology of research in history of journalism. Three analytical levels are recognized and distinguished in journalism: the content, the container and the network connecting both. These levels need to be closely linked. In order to that purpose, and paying special attention to the first decades of the nineteenth century, I propose ways to progress towards an examination of some structures of the press: continuity and discontinuity; authorship, responsibility and signature; contents; circulation; repetition; and metajournalistic structures.
