The Solidarity Library: Development Cooperation and Digital Inclusion

Abstract
The librarian institution has as its traditional mission the providing of public access to reading materials, general information and knowledge. The heightened awareness of inequalities and social injustices, plus the role of national and international librarians has transformed the traditional role of the librarian into an attitude of social commitment which seeks to achieve a more just, cultured and humane world. Libraries and those professionals who work in the field help guarantee these fundamental rights; such as the right to culture, education and free access to knowledge. Amongst the many initiatives that libraries foment we can fi nd cooperation and development programs that help advance technological competences, literacy and social networking skills.
