The “level of Spanish” variable in the context of the lexicon available to students of Spanish as a foreign language

Abstract
There are already plenty of lexical availability studies for the mother tongue of a community. For the teaching of foreign languages, on the other hand, there are very few. This article is based on a study of the lexical availability of students of Spanish as a foreign language at the University of Cadiz and of the factors which affect this availability. It analyzes the effect of the students’ level of Spanish on the number of lexical units found in the availability surveys. Further, this paper emphasizes the importance of not only a descriptive statistical analysis but also an inductive one, since it allows extrapolating them to the whole group of students which is the focus of the study.
