Abstract
This paper presents the results of a study about the model of gene expression and determinism in 10th grade Biology and Geology textbooks. Four dimensions are analyzed: a) the definition of phenotype; b) examples of the influence of the environment on gene expression; c) questions and activities requiring the application of the phenotype notion; d) mentions to determinism or “race”. The findings show that only one of the textbooks in the sample provides activities about the application of the model of gene expression. The issue of biological determinism is not explicitly addressed in any of the textbooks. We suggest that textbooks need to include activities that promote the application of the model of gene expression and favour the development of critical thinking about determinism. Keywords
